So Close to Mars

“'Nearly flawless': Orion passes 2-orbit test flight”
By: Jason Hanna and Amanda Barnett
CNN
http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/05/tech/innovation/nasa-orion-launch/index.html?hpt=us_c2

After a 4½-hour flight on Friday, NASA's Orion capsule plopped down in the Pacific Ocean on Friday morning after flying around the planet twice on a test flight (no crew inside). NASA hopes it will be able to take astronauts to Mars. Currently it has passed its first test in space. The Orion flew farther from Earth than any craft designed by NASA before since the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972. This is building up NASA’s confidence and making it their goal to build a program that will take its first human crew into space in 2021. Right now Orion is capable of taking a crew of six to the moon and places far beyond. One of Orion's tasks could be to send astronauts to asteroids. NASA says it hopes that Orion will send astronauts to asteroids, Mars’ moons and eventually Mars itself in the 2020s.
The people should read this article because they would realize that scientists at NASA are extremely close to completing something we titled as impossible. They are one step closer to mastering the science of exploring space. With our enhanced technology we will be able to fully explore Mars and other places in outer space without any difficulties. All of our questions about the red planet and the other locations would be answered. We, the people, must remain patient and have faith in NASA’s scientists. Soon we will uncover the mysteries that lie in space. If this is not intriguing then I do not know what is?

Earthquake in Japan

“Dozens injured after strong earthquake shakes central Japan”

By: Yoko Wakatsuki and Jethro Mullen

http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/22/world/asia/japan-earthquake/index.html?hpt=wo_c2

A strong earthquake vibrated central Japan Saturday night. Many were injured and several homes near a well-known ski resort were wrecked. The Japan Meteorological Agency estimated that the earthquakes magnitude was 6.8, while the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported it was a magnitude of 6.2. The skiing village of Hakuba, where seven housing and storage structures were wrecked, was hit quite hard by the earthquake. The police stated that seven out of the 39 people hurt in the quake suffered serious injuries. Japanese television stations showed images of landslides that had cut-off roads, crushed houses, and damaged highways. More than 300 rescue workers were positioned to search for people still trapped in their collapsed homes and buildings. The rescue operation was said to have been successful and completed. The Tokyo Electric Power Co. commented on Twitter Saturday, reassuring the people that none of the electric facilities or nuclear power plants was damaged during the earthquake. The Japan Meteorological Agency said that aftershocks did follow the main quake Saturday night; this includes one measured at a magnitude of 4.1.

This article, like the other earthquake articles, is a sign for us individuals. We the people should start preparing ourselves for an earthquake. There have been multiple earthquakes these past few months, some close some far, and who knows where the next one will strike next. The earthquakes are only getting stronger and stronger and God forbid something was to happen to us next. Instead of sitting and waiting for the next one, we should start preparing ourselves for the worst.

The Complicated Future Awaits Us

Wow the year 2035? There will be quite a lot of changes during that time compared to know. I always imagined the future with flying cars, hover boards, and jetpacks but of course the world has disappointed me. Even though I might remain disappointed for the rest of my life I know that there will be some amazing changes in the educational section of the world. In my mind I imagine a high school based more on technology than books. Computers will teach us instead of humans (sorry Mrs. Kirkman) although students will miss the emotional connection they have with real teachers since computers do not have any emotion and if they do then they will be able to rule over mankind and destroy us all, but that is another story. Say goodbye to textbooks because in the year 2035 everything will be done on tablets provided by the school and that means that lockers will cease to exist since they will not be used anymore. I know that seniors will be carefree and too calm like they are know so they will not study as much as they should so in the future science will be so evolved that before seniors graduate their minds will be implanted with all the information they need to know in order to follow their dreams and be whatever it is they wish to be. You are probably asking yourself why students cannot have the information implanted in them from the start and the answer is simple yet maybe a tad complicated. You see the point of the implant is to obtain information based on what field of study you wish to complete. In the beginning of high school there are multiple students who have no clue on what they want to be so the logical option would be to wait until they are seniors because by then almost all of the will know what they want to be in the future. The only down side to all of this is that once a student chooses a field they are now allowed to switch. In the end humans will be total spawns to technology.  Does the future not sound totally fun? I am not crazy just creative.

Spacecraft Disaster

“SpaceShipTwo crash investigation may take up to a year”

By: Saeed Ahmed, Chelsea J. Carter and Ralph Ellis

Source: CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/02/us/spaceshiptwo-incident/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

The Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo, worth half a billion dollars, crashed earlier this week during its test flight. The spacecraft could seat up to six people but only two were inside during the test. Sadly one of the two piolets died when the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo crashed in the Mojave Desert and the co-piolet survived but is seriously injured. Apparently, no one knows how or why the spacecraft crashed and the surviving co-pilot cannot recall what caused the collision. There is a team of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board who will be on site in the Mojave Desert for about a week. Although it has been said it may take up to twelve months before the investigation is complete. The Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo had six cameras on it during the test but it will take time to retrieve the feed from them. We do not yet know what the future could hold for Virgin Galactic. If the problem of the failure is not found then this project will be a failure and will remain that way since there will be no solution. The co-pilot must be interviewed as part of the investigation but doctors had mentioned that an interview will not take place anytime soon due to his severe injuries.
The people should read such an article because it is quite intriguing. Citizens should know that there are always those who would risk their own lives in order to help advance our technology. Many should pay their respects to the one pilot who sadly died for a great cause.

Thirteen Years Already?

“UK formally ends combat mission in Afghanistan”

By: Christabelle Fombu and Bryony Jones

Source: CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/26/world/asia/afghanistan-uk-combat-end/index.html?hpt=hp_t4

Britain is finally out of Afghanistan everyone!  Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted, "I made a commitment that I would get our Armed Forces out of Afghanistan by 2015, and today sees the end of combat operations in the country,"(Cameron, 1). This officially marks the end to the 13 years that UK has had their military in Afghanistan. 453 UK troops have sacrificed themselves in Afghanistan and everyone should pay their respects to those brave soldiers who had enough courage to fight for their country. Now all the UK bases in Afghanistan will be taken over by the Afghan National Security Forces and they will continue the remaining operations.
To think that after 13 years the UK military is finally leaving Afghanistan. The people should be glad to hear such news because we have been told that our own military will also leave Afghanistan by 2015. Now the American people must remain patient until they hear such news. This truly is remarkable news and I hope that all who read or are reading this article feel as overjoyed as I do. The American people should devote at least one minute of their time to pray for and thank all the soldiers who voluntarily took part in going to Afghanistan for their country. Lives were lost, lives were saved, and lives were sacrificed in order to bring upon something that people hope for and believe that it is truly their and this my friends is peace.

"Education"

S- Education reformation/ philosophy

O- American Scholar 1800s

A-Readers of the magazine/ educators/ parents

P- To persuade/ to educate

S- R.W. Emerson

T- Philosophical/ confident/ professional

  1. The SOAPST helps the reader better understand the piece of literature, “Education”.  The subject does give the readers an idea on what the piece is about and the purpose would help them comprehend on why and for what reasons R. W. Emerson wrote such a piece. This is about t how Emerson believes children should be raised and educated it is his tone that convinces the reader what he is saying is true. When the readers know his tone they will realize that he is confident, not afraid to speak his mind, professional, and philosophical. Emerson believes that when it comes to learning a child should be left alone to choose their own path. Their parent may help when help is needed but are not allowed to give the child a set path for the future. Emerson perfectly explains what educators should and should not do and why.

  2. This piece of literature is quite effective for the intended audience generally because the intended audience is for the readers of the magazine but mostly for educators (parents included). It benefits them because it teaches them and persuades them to the right thing, which in this case would be to follow his steps on how to better educate a child. This piece could educate many people by help teaching them the more enhanced way to help a child learn, which is to let them learn through observation, experience and should be allowed to choose their future on their own with no outside aid.

Our Education

What is education? I think of it as the knowledge, skill, and understanding that one receives from attending school.  Yes I believe that schools are providing us students with the education that we need but they are teaching it to us the wrong way. I believe that the education schools provide us with is only temporary because students only learn though memorizing in order to earn a high grade, pass the class, and try to be accepted into a college or university. The problem is not the students but rather the school itself. Who could possibly remember every single fact, equation, story, or vocabulary word that they learned during their school life? Yes, there are those occasional students who possibly can remember all of this but what majority does not. In my opinion I think that schools are teaching us but there is too much extra information involved. Students should be taught the right way, without grades. Although I am not going to go in depth on this since it is not what I should be talking about.

Schools teach students how to react in certain situations, how to be social, polite, friendly, etc. We learn what is needed in order to know how to handle the real world. Something else I believe about schools is that they help students find their true calling. They help us find what we are passionate about, what we want to be, what we want to achieve in life, and what we plant to do in order to make our dreams become a reality.

Goodbye Mars?

“Duck-and-cover time for Mars spacecraft as comet nears”

 By: Amanda Barnett,

Source: CNN

A comet is hurtling towards Mars at an extremely close distance. Is this the end for the red planet we all know and love? The answer is perhaps. The comet was said to pass Mars today at 2:27 p.m.  NASA assumes that the comet will merely pass Mars, but comets do spew out a trail of dust and gas, which could damage the group of spacecraft’s orbiting Mars. Better safe than sorry, NASA will change the course of the Mars Odyssey orbiter, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), and the new Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) to the other side of the planet when the comet approaches. Luckily the rovers on Mars will be protected by Mars’s atmosphere. The space crafts will be taking pictures of the comet as it passes by them in order to collect data. Since Mars will be extremely close to the comet it could might encounter some bits from the debris cloud left behind by the comet itself.

This is interesting news people! A planet could possibly be destroyed by this comet. Why would anyone not want to read about this?  Okay so yes the planet is going to survive but it makes people wonder how different our lives would be if Mars did get destroyed. This means a lot to those who have spent their entire lives studying, appreciating and observing the Red Planet. We are extremely lucky that the comet will not be harming Mars (maybe) because then our years of research would be a waste.

Thoughts on Community Service(Article 4)

What is community service? One could describe it as doing voluntary work in order to help people in a particular area/community. High schools do make it mandatory for their students to complete a certain amount of hours for community service and the only reason these students complete these hours is because it looks good on their college resume. This concept is known as “resume padding.” The students say, “…their motive in becoming involved was to make a stronger case to please college admission officer” (Chaptman, 157). Although, there are those who strongly believe that most high school students are motivated to do community service because they enjoy it. An example would be those students who even after completing their hours, still continue to voluntarily work because it feels right to them. Why else would they continue to volunteer? The only logical reason would be because they find it entertaining and it helps them become more responsible, gives them experience on how to work in the real world, and they can also build character. When made mandatory, high school students only see community service as, “…a key to college admission” (Chaptman, 157). What if it was not mandatory and was only suggested from time to time? In this case there would still be those students who would happily volunteer anyways because they know it is the right thing to do. People must believe that yes, there are those who are repulsed at the sheer idea of community service but there are also those who take joy in helping their community without receiving anything in return.

Pluto is Back

“Is demoted planet Pluto making a comeback?”

By: Amanda Barnett

Source: CNN

Remember the good old days when we had nine planets instead of eight? Well now we have nine again because Pluto’s back! Apparently Pluto was not considered as a planet anymore because it was too small to get rid of space rocks in order to make a clear path around the Sun. What kind of reason is that? A planet is defined as something that is round and can orbit the Sun. Pluto obviously is both round and can orbit the Sun, but just because it could not knock out some rocks from its path it was not considered as planet anymore. On September 18, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics had a debate on: What is a planet? After discussing for a while they allowed the audience to vote and they voted that Pluto is a planet. Now a spacecraft called New Horizons is going to be sent to Pluto in July! If the spacecraft does make it past the difficult seven week journey, “dodging asteroids as it zips toward Pluto,” (Stern, 1) then we will finally able to see up close pictures of Pluto.

The people should read this news article because it is an amazing revolution in planetary science. All we have done is mocked Pluto for not being a planet and for being isolated, but now everything has changed. This is quite a shocking discovery and I am sure most people would love to read about it. Pluto is finally going to be back in or lives.

Earthquake Near Mammoth Mountain Volcano

“Earthquakes reported near Mammoth Mountain volcano”

By: Amanda Watts

Source: CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/26/us/mammoth-mountain-volcano-earthquakes/index.html?hpt=us_c2

Outbreaks of small earthquakes have been rumbling close to Mammoth Mountain Volcano. The United States Geological Survey has categorized these quakes as “volcanic unrest.” For the past two days, almost three dozen earthquakes ranging from magnitudes of 2.6 to 3.8 have circled that area, which is northeast of Fresno, California. Earthquake groups in that region are not exactly rare, but this one was quite a surprise. A seismologist from California Volcano Observatory, David Shelly, said this group is "bigger than we've seen recently, but normal in the area"(Shelly, 1). In addition, David mentions that they are going to keep an extremely close eye on the movement, although he also mentions, "But in the larger scheme of things, it's within in the range of activity over the last several decades"(Shelly, 1). Mammoth Mountain, also known as the Long Valley Caldera, has been stirring slowly over the last several decades, which is why the seismologists are continuously monitoring it. "We think there is fluid coming up from the crust triggering the earthquakes," said Shelly. So far, the awareness level at the United States Geological Survey, or USGS for short, is still at the green level (which means everything is normal).

The general public should read this article because they should know that there is a slim chance something could happen to Mammoth Mountain Volcano. This news article could help people realize how close these earthquakes are and how strong some of their magnitudes are. I believe the best reason for reading this article would be for the public to start preparing themselves for an earthquake, or earthquakes’, if it were to happen again, God forbid.

Curiosity on Mars

“Mars rover Curiosity reaches key destination; 'new science ahead!'”

By: Suzanne Presto

Source: CNN

NASA's Mars rover named Curiosity finally reached its destination, the center of a Martian mountain in the middle of a deep crater. This mountain has been named Mt. Sharp. The mountain’s layers are basically records of the different stages in the environmental development of Mars. Curiosity’s main mission objective was to determine whether the Martian environment could have been livable to microorganisms. Apparently Curiosity was able to find evidence on the crater’s floor that a lake bed was present there billions of years ago which offered fresh water, the vital ingredients for life and a basis of energy for the microbes. This amazing discovery was not easy to find. There were many obstacles and challenges in Curiosity’s way such as sharp rocks that could have punctured the rover’s wheels. It has now been two years since Curiosity first landed on Mars. It set off in November 2011 and landed roughly nine months later. Now the rover must collect samples from Mt. Sharp in order for NASA to examine them but some of them are shifting, for example the rock called “Bonanza King”, so the rover had to stop at least four more times.

The citizens should be informed because this information would raise the peoples’ curiosity about other living things out in space. They would realize that with this discovery scientists at NASA would soon be to enhance our technology in order to fully explore Mars without any difficulties. This could also mean that there are other living organisms living or were living on Mars.

Chocolate Heaven

As a kid I always despised change, which also involved trying new things. Ever since we were little my brother and I would eat dinner at my grandma’s house every Friday night and then eat ice cream for dessert. He would always eat chocolate ice cream while I only ate vanilla because it was the single flavor I had ever tasted. This arrangement continued for nearly five years until one day Joseph decided he wanted to try vanilla. I was utterly confused on why he had chosen to change our usual pattern and for some reason this angered me. I was annoyed that he was eating my flavor therefore I figured he would be furious if I ate his favorite flavor, chocolate. I remember storming off into the kitchen, grabbing the pint of chocolate ice cream, scooping up a large sum of it on my spoon and eating.

At first I thought it would taste extremely awful but then I felt different. The rich creamy taste sent my taste buds on a wonderful journey to chocolate heaven. It had such a sweet taste, smooth as silk texture, warm brown color, a pleasantly enticing smell .It was as if my hands were moving on their own and soon I found myself eating another spoonful and another and another. Soon I felt my teeth chatter due to the freezing temperature in my mouth. When I looked down I noticed that I had already finished half the pint and decided to put it back in the freezer before my parents found out. Then I ran back to my grandma’s room where Joseph was watching cartoons and hugged the life out of him. I even learned that chocolate is healthier than most flavors. Flavanols, a key ingredient of dark chocolate, boosts blood flow to key areas of the brain for two to three hours. Ever since that day I have tried all thirty one flavors Baskin Robins has to offer and out of all of them chocolate is and will always be number one. The best trait about chocolate is that there are also different kinds (dark chocolate, chocolate fudge. etc.). Chocolate has been the number one flavor in my heart and I know it will always remain that way because to me I believe that chocolate ice cream is God’s way of giving us happiness.

"Guardians of the Galaxy"

“Box office update: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' becomes the top-grossing movie of 2014”

By: Keith Staskiewicz

Source: Entertainment Weekly

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/08/30/box-office-guardians-of-the-galaxy-top-grossing-movie-2014/

“Guardians of the Galaxy” is a science fiction movie about a man named Peter Quill who steals a mysterious orb in the far reaches of outer space. He is now the main target of a manhunt led by the villain known as Ronan the Accuser. To help fight Ronan, his army and save the galaxy from his power, Quill creates a team known as the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' to save the world. Entertainment Weekly calls it, “the top-grossing movie of the 2014 domestic box office, surpassing the valiant efforts of Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (Staskiewicz,1). Keith Staskiewicz says that “Guardians” made $262.1 million, which is $2.4 million more than “Captain America 2” and with this he is writing his claim of fact. He is also using logos because of the money value difference between the two movies. This review was written on August 30 so it would not be surprising if the difference in numbers rose from $2.4 million to even higher.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is quite popular and known for being an incredible movie. By saying that “Guardians of the Galaxy” has surpassed “Captain America 2”, Keith is writing his claim of value since his words mean that “Guardians” is an unbelievably amazing movie, which is more superior than “Captain America 2”. Also, by stating that “Guardians” is a better movie he is using pathos because this is how he feels about the movie. Keith’s criteria for movies seem to be the fast-paced, action filled types containing countless adventures and even a bit of romance.

Close Call

“Newly found asteroid to pass close to Earth on Sunday”

A recently discovered asteroid, called 2014 RC, will pass by Earth at a close range. Luckily, this asteroid will not hit Earth or crash into any of the thousands of satellites circling around the planet. Asteroid 2014 RC was founded on August 31 by the Catalina Sky Survey close to Tucson, Arizona. This space rock has been projected to be 60 feet long and soar over New Zealand. Fortunately, this will give the astronomers and scientists at NASA a chance to study it. Experts at NASA have already stated that there are thousands of asteroids that could hit Earth but none of them are probable to hit the planet soon. Although, there have been cases when asteroids, meteors, and small space rocks are undetected by scientists. One example would be on February 15, 2013 when a 60-foot-wide meteor penetrated into Earth’s atmosphere and exploded just above a Russian city. This meteor had the power of about 30 nuclear bombs and injured1,500 people. NASA is trying to find a faster way to track asteroids close to Earth and capture one in the 2020’ for research.

The public should be updated on this kind of information to know that there are other threats out there other than natural disasters. Hopefully, this will article will help them have faith in NASA to protect the Earth from any upcoming danger. The people ought to also read this so they know how close they were from getting hit by an asteroid. It is really exciting when you think about it.

US Wants to Arm Ukraine

“Ukraine crisis: US senators urge arms 'to fight Russia'”

By: Not mentioned

Source: BBC

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-29007631

The US has made a decision to help arm Ukraine so that the people can protect themselves against a Russian assault. The struggle in eastern Ukraine started in April when Russia took over Ukraine's southern Crimea peninsula and about 2,600 people have died since then. Senator McCain said that Ukraine must be provided with artilleries: "Give them the weapons they need. Give them the wherewithal they need. Give them the ability to fight"(McCain, 1). Many rebel forces have gained control of land in the far southeast of Ukraine where the Ukraine troops are trying to raise defenses in order to protect residents. The people of Ukraine blame Russia’s military for helping the rebels with their achievements. Of course the Russians deny that their military was involved. Mr. Putin believes that what the rebels are doing is "the natural reaction of people who are defending their rights"(Putin, 1). Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko believes that at this rate Ukraine is close to having a full scale war against Russia and this is why the US wants to help them by giving them weapons.

It is important for the general public to read about this because the people should know that the Russians are interfering in eastern Ukraine and they are not letting the people decide their own future. Russian troops are currently inside Ukraine territory which is a violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. The people should know this in order to not to blame the government for not interfering and trying to help the people in need.

"Speech to the Troops at Tilbury"

S- To give support to her troops/ give them courage

O- 1588, Tilbury

A- Troops

P- To motivate/ to encourage/ to persuade

S- Queen Elizabeth

T- Persuasive/ strong/ determined/ fearless/ superior

  1. After reading the SOAPST the reader can better understand the background for the “Speech to the Troops at Tilbury” and will be able to comprehend the type of conditions the troops are in. The subject alone would be able to help the reader realize what the piece of literature is about and how the troops are at a disadvantage. Knowing who the speaker is benefits the reader too because seeing that Queen Elizabeth is the one giving the speech assists in emphasizing the position that they as a country are in. Although truthfully it is her tone that makes it all come together. The way she sounds so determined and tough shows the reader that this speech does have the power to persuade the audience.
  2. This speech is quite effective for the intended audience generally because of the inspiring word she uses. Queen Elizabeth states that her people are “faithful” and “loving,” admiring their “loyalty” and “goodwill.” These positive words allow her subjects to see her as a caring and kindhearted leader whose praise urges them to fight for their country, though what really motivated the soldiers was probably the fact that she said, “We have been persuaded…”(40) This will encourage the troops to see her as a fellow Englishman and not just as a coldhearted queen.

6.0 Earthquake Hits Napa

“Northern California earthquake the strongest in 25 years”
By: Josh Levs, Susanna Capelouto, and Carma Hassan
Source: CNN

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 hit Northern California early this morning at 3:20am. It struck six miles southwest of Napa. Luckily no one was killed but at least 150 were wounded and three critically injured, including a child who got hurt when a fireplace collapsed. Many buildings collapsed, homes were destroyed and fires broke out. The fires continued to grow because of the lack of water since there were at least sixty water main breaks in the area. There have been reports of six major fires and many mobile homes were burned down. The local high school is now used as a shelter for those without homes. There have been reports of over 60 aftershocks, their magnitudes ranging from 0.6 to 3.6.

The general public should read this article for multiple reasons. One reason is that they should know the magnitude of the earthquake in order to be aware of how immense the damages could be. Two, this news article could help people realize how close the earthquake was and be grateful that they were not present there during the disaster. Although, the best reason for reading this article would be for the public to start preparing themselves for an earthquake if it happens in again, God forbid. I am sure everyone has heard about the “Big One”, the enormous earthquake that could happen at any moment. Some could think of the earthquake this morning as a sign for the people to start organizing themselves in order to be prepared for the next earthquake.

The following advertisement is for Aveeno , a manufacturer of skin care and hair products. Jennifer Aniston is a well-known celebrity which creates the ethos in the advertisement.  The fact that she is a famous actress guarantees  that people would stop to read this advertisement and most probably buy the following product. Her image helps persuade women to buy Aveeno because they would belive that by buying Aveeno their skin would also look as great as Jennifer Anistons.  As you can see, Jennifer Aniston looks pleased and joyful because she used Aveeno and now her skin looks clean and radiant. This would be the pathos becaue of the way she is expressing her emotions by looking content with her skin. This helps show that anyone who buys Aveeno would also be happy with the results of the product.

The Aveeno advertisement emphasizes the use of soy in their product. The statement on the right section of the advertisement would be the logos because it states that soy helps even the tone and texture of skin. If one where to search this on the internet they would probably find these facts about soy aiding damaged skin true. This advertisement is quite effective because it uses ethos, logos, and pathos. By using these it is capable of persuading anyone to buy Aveeno in order to make their skin look more radiant and healthy. The picture of the Aveeno box is also the the reason it is effective because Aveeno is a popular product and several people know that the company uses natural ingredients.
