A
strong earthquake vibrated central Japan Saturday night. Many were injured and
several homes near a well-known ski resort were wrecked. The Japan
Meteorological Agency estimated that the earthquakes magnitude was 6.8, while
the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported it was a magnitude of 6.2. The skiing
village of Hakuba, where seven housing and storage structures were wrecked, was
hit quite hard by the earthquake. The police stated that seven out of the 39
people hurt in the quake suffered serious injuries. Japanese television
stations showed images of landslides that had cut-off roads, crushed houses,
and damaged highways. More than 300 rescue workers were positioned to search
for people still trapped in their collapsed homes and buildings. The rescue
operation was said to have been successful and completed. The Tokyo Electric
Power Co. commented on Twitter Saturday, reassuring the people that none of the
electric facilities or nuclear power plants was damaged during the earthquake. The
Japan Meteorological Agency said that aftershocks did follow the main quake
Saturday night; this includes one measured at a magnitude of 4.1.
This article, like the other earthquake articles, is a
sign for us individuals. We the people should start preparing ourselves for an
earthquake. There have been multiple earthquakes these past few months, some
close some far, and who knows where the next one will strike next. The
earthquakes are only getting stronger and stronger and God forbid something was
to happen to us next. Instead of sitting and waiting for the next one, we
should start preparing ourselves for the worst.
