This
is a scene from Family Guy. It is a political satire that shows how
presidential candidates and voters act. It is a good representation of
political satire because while being entertaining and humorous, it still expresses
messages about what politics and voters are actually like. It appeals to the
audience by making jokes about certain topics (in this case 9/11), and it is
still able to show a real life message. It starts with the question: "If
reelected, will you increase the frequency of garbage pickups?" Mayor West
replies by not answering the question, but just dancing around it and finishing
by saying something the public will like, instead of an actual answer. Then
everyone started talking happily about him and saying they will vote for him.
Lois is boggled by such response from the voters. Brian tells her to just stick
to short answers and that will win her this debate. She is then asked about
what she will do about crime in the city. All she says is "A lot" and
the crowd goes wild. Her answer for the next questions is also “9/11.”
This scene is particularly making fun of all Americans in
a generalized manner. It is using mockery and humor to show that most voters in
America are looking for answers that they like and want to hear, not the
correct responses. It shows satire by showing that people of America will
believe anything and everything they hear in political debates. This proves
that all you have to do to win an election is say all the right stuff, not have
all the right intentions.
I am cracking up! Oh my god, the love I have for Family Guy. Anyways, the clip was extremely funny and your explanation of whom the clip is making fun of (all Americans) and why is exceptional. I love how Adam West kisses Mort Goldman on the forehead, because it reminds me of Raffi kissing my head, lol. Fantastic job, Vana!
ReplyDeleteVana, what a wonderful job. Your post made me laugh and it was explained perfectly. You described the clip well, and the clip that you have chosen did make me laugh. I do love Family Guy and am happy that you have picked this as your clip to analyze it. Vana, you did an awesome job. Keep on Writing!!!!
ReplyDeleteVana, I concur with your statement that this clip is representative of presidential candidates (*cough cough* Mitt Romney) who avoid the question asked to them. When Lois conforms with this political technique, she is given the freedom to answer questions with the most absurd answers such as "9/11". This goes to show that we, as American citizens, have a civic duty to be more aware (as consumers, as voters, etc.).
ReplyDeleteThe video you chose addresses a serious corruption issue in America. You did a fine job of analyzing the video and the message it was trying to portray. I liked the fact that you said that 9/11 was the answer for several questions, even though the event was a horrible day for America, which accurately depicts the satire in the video.
ReplyDeleteVana the video chose was both funny but true. Your analysis of the satire found on the video was very interesting to read. This was an excellent choice of satire, and you made good connections between this and undecided voters. Good job!
ReplyDeleteUh Vana... This is so funny! I picked the exact same skit. What a coincidence! It was a very entertaining video and it was very clear with making a point. This is an issue that happens everyday in America! Watching it actually opened my eyes to the truth while also making me laugh. Satire is used perfectly in the skit. Nice work!
